More Laws Cracking Down on Metal Detecting

According to the Watertown Daily Times in New York, holes were found in Champion Park and Village Green Park left there by a metal detectorist. This initiated a meeting of the city council in which they passed a new local law banning the use of detectors, digging, and removing artifacts from the park.

Councilman Thomas E. Stewart was quoted saying, “We found someone was up there with a metal detector and was digging around. It just wasn’t right.”

My thoughts: I believe this is ignorance on the part of both the council members and the person who dug the holes. As many of you know, there is a code of ethics we as treasure hunters like to follow which includes asking permission and leaving the area in either the same condition you found it in or better (i.e. filling in your holes!). This law seems to have been passed under the assumption that metal detecting is some sort of desctructive scavenging which damages property and should be looked down upon as a crime.

Metal detecting is a hobby that provides many benefits to the community. Detectorists all around the world have returned long lost heirlooms to their owners decades after they were lost. We remove trash from the parks including sharp metals (even needles) which makes it safer for our children. We find history that can be shared with the community and the hobby also benefits people with a healthy low stress excercise.

I for one wish law makers would consider the positive impact the majority of us make instead of punishing us all for the ignorance and maliciousness of a small minority.

How To Clean Clad Coins

If you are like me, you end up with jars full of clad coins that are too dirty to cash in at the bank or use at stores. Here is the best method for cleaning up those clad coins so you can spend them!

1) Purchase a small rock tumbler. This is a good investment as it is useful for cleaning all sorts of corroded metal items and also great if you collect rocks and minerals.

2) Get some small aquarium gravel and some dish soap.

3) You have everything you need to begin. Fill the tumbler 1/2 full with aquarium gravel and a handful junk clad coins.

WARNING: It is not recommended to clean potentially valuable coins with this method, only junk clad coins!

4) Put enough water in the tumbler to cover the coins by about 1/4″ and add a teaspoon of dish soap.

5) Let it run for 12 hours.

6) Remove coins/gravel/soapy water mixture into a strainer. Rinse them thoroughly!

7) Place cleaned mixture into a wire mesh sieve that has holes big enough to allow the gravel to pass through but not the coins and separate the mixture and voila!

8) Save the gravel so you can reuse it for the next batch!

My Thoughts on a Goonies Sequel

There is buzz floating around the entertainment world, mostly speared by Corey Feldman who has been the unofficial “cheerleader” for a sequel, to making a Goonies part two. It seems the movie industry continues to try to suck a few extra dollars out of classic movies which usually bomb as sequels but curiousity, nostalgia from the original, and hype seem to be enough drive to pull a little dough. I personally think it would be a horrible idea. I grew up loving The Goonies and would hate to see it ruined by yet another hollywood flop that would embarass the franchise and bring negative connotations to a generational classic.

What are your thoughts? How do you think they could even make a decent movie from the original Goonies plot? All the original characters are somewhere around 40 years old now and both Mama Fratelli and Sloth have since passed away. I’m interested in hearing your comments…

Treasure Island Movie With “Sherlock Holmes” Producer’s Twist

The classic “Treasure Island” story by Robert Louis Stevenson has seen more filming than many actors in the business today. According to IMDB, there are at least 34 movies with that exact title, but who say’s there isn’t room for more? This story has come along way since the original cinematic inception in 1950 with Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins and has seen big names such as Charlton Heston, Christian Bale, Orson Welles, and more.

Now the producer of the 2009 incarnation of “Sherlock Holmes”, Lionel Wigram, has entered the movie scene again in conjunction with Warner Brothers to create a new “Treasure Island” with a flair and edge that is becoming his style. He has competition from a studio called Ecosse so we will just have to wait and see who gets it first.

I personally am excited to see a new exciting version of this age old classic. If you haven’t read the book yet, I highly recommend it. You can find it on Amazon for $13.60 in hardcover the last time I checked.

New White’s Spectrum XLT

whites-spectrum-xltToday I finally received my new metal detector in the mail. It is a White’s Spectrum XLT that is lightly used, and I got a great deal on it. I will be taking my new toy out and about here in Japan to get a taste of what I can find and you will all be the first to know!

The metal detector came with a soft carrying case, a book, and a Bullseye Pinpointer all for approximately $400. I figure that’s not too bad of a deal.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting :)
